MISC Berhad (MISC) today announced a commitment of RM40 million through its MISC Education Sponsorship, supporting 153 students to pursue maritime studies over the next 3.5 years at Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM).
This latest sponsorship brings the total of 776 cadets that we have supported to date, underscoring MISC’s firm role in nurturing Malaysia’s maritime talent pipeline. The investment covers tuition fees, training, and living allowances, enabling cadets to undertake specialised diploma programmes in Nautical Studies, Marine Engineering, and Marine Electro-Technology which was introduced beginning this year.
President & Group Chief Executive Officer of MISC, Zahid Osman, said: “At MISC, we believe education is one of the most powerful catalysts for change. This sponsorship goes beyond financial support; it is an investment in human potential. By enabling deserving students who require assistance to pursue their studies, we are opening pathways to professional maritime careers that can transform not only their own futures, but also the lives of their families and generations to come. This sponsorship reflects our unwavering commitment to developing Malaysia’s human capital for the maritime sector and is a clear expression of our ESG values in delivering progress responsibly, inclusively, and sustainably.”
Since 1977, MISC has taken a leading role in shaping Malaysia’s maritime human capital, as one of the founding members of the Malaysian Training and Education for Seamen (MATES). More than 15,000 maritime professionals were trained since 1977 at ALAM, many of who now serve in senior positions at sea and ashore, both locally and internationally. This legacy affirms MISC’s contribution to the nation as the principal driver of maritime talent development, ensuring Malaysia continues to have a strong pipeline of competent officers and engineers to serve the industry and the country.
In 2006, ALAM welcomed its first batch of female cadets enrolled in the Diploma in Nautical Studies and Diploma in Marine Engineering programmes. This move positioned ALAM as one of the first maritime academies in the region to embrace gender inclusivity in maritime education. Today, MISC continues to champion opportunities for women at sea, reflecting our commitment to a more diverse, inclusive, and progressive maritime workforce.
